Back to the Egg

(Subtitle: Beatles' O-Parts)

Many "O-Parts (out of place artifacts)" are found in the early Beatles. By comparing them with the songs that were released at the time, you can explore the musical history.

The following is not exactly "before the Beatles" but "before the debut". Paul's recognition (description of self-introduction) shows that the Beatles were formed in the early summer of 1959, when he had little activity history. However, this seems to contain some pitfalls. Actually, the activity of "THE BEATLES" (the group name has changed) has started since around 1960 in Scotland tour.

The key man of musical growth seems to be Jim Gretty, who has obtained at least three chords (F#7#9, F#dim, C#7) through a copy of'Till There Was You'. These are unfamiliar in R&B, and it is speculated that F#7#9 and F#dim contributed to the inspiration for'Michelle' and C#7 for'PS I Love You'.

However, F#7#9 and C#7 are taught as examples of substitute codes (substitutes), which are also called "back code (relation of 4th degree, code on diagonal line of 5th degree, and difficult expression)". It seems that they are used as "one of the new chords" because they cannot understand music theory. In addition, I Will ending has the same usage as the 'Till There Was You'.

January 1960
Chet Atkins has released a cover version (instrument) of'Till There Was You' on "Teensville" (album).
It is speculated that F#7#9 and F#dim, which were taught by jazz guitarist Jim Gretty when making this copy, were the points of Michelle 's melody.
It is also presumed that Till There Was You's ending C#7 (Db7) was also taught at this time.

Around 1960 spring
Group home recordings are left. Michelle does not appear in the recording list, but One After 909 records two versions (semitone difference) and I'll Follow The Sun 's initial version (crust difference).

End of May 1960
As Ms. Austin Mitchell regularly holds a party at John's art college, a Scottish tour as Johnny Gentle's backing band (named The Beatals, Paul used to call himself a French fake).
It is being held and Paul remembers playing and singing a French style song there ( probably Michelle 's original song).
At this time, group names such as The Silver Beetles, The Silver Beatles, Long John and ... were confirmed. There seems to be some typo Beetles.

Participated in recording as Tony Sheridan's back band (Drums Pete Best).
At the same time, John and George's "Cry For A Shadow" was also recorded ( details are attached in the attached table ).
In the self-introduction sentence at this time, Paul wrote, "Quarry Men for about 4 years and the Beatles for about 2 years in parallel." It seems correct to understand that the name change was repeated only for "Beatles", but for other than that, temporary project names were provoked.
Also, in the self-introduction, John and Paul wrote about bass guitar as "Guitar Bass"!

August 1961
THE MARVELETTES has released'Please Mr. Postman'.
Note: "Mister" is abbreviated.

Decca Audition'Till
There Was You' played here (reference: Teikku board "THE SILVER BEATLES" ) has two interludes, the first is the same content as the release version, the second is Peggy Lee -A version close to the version is being played. Since the second interlude has disappeared at the end-of-year star club, it can be seen that the decker auditioned the Peggy Lee version, which was a hit at the time.

January 5, 1962
'My Bonnie' (English intro version) will be released in the UK.
The trend of this chart is not good, and the British Polydor quickly loses interest, and Decca sends a refusal notice in early February.
1962The Crickets (Buddy Holly has already passed away) has released'Don't Ever Change' .
C#m-Caug(Eaug)-A song that uses the chord progression of E , and the effect of'All My Loving' on the chorus is inferred. In addition , going to the A chord with chorus shows the atmosphere of the interlude of the same song .
In addition, 'Ask Me Why' at a point to go to rust Ya 'From Me To You' place to return to the A melody in being used any time, any interest that has become triplets.

Along the way, John gets a harmonica!
I'm not sure how to get it, but I am getting a 16-hole lever-type chromatic harmonica (an expensive item whose order is different from that of a 10-hole blues harp). The harmonica in C was probably the reason why Love Me Do was lowered from key A to key G (using harmonica as the second position).
At this time, he composed the following. Compose
Ask Me Why (Eaug) Compose
Love Me Do (Beginning around 16 years old ) Compose
PS I Love You (C#7)

Pete Best as the first recording session drummer on Abbey Road
Love Me Do of the day was recorded in "ANTHOLOGY", but you can see that the harmonica part has the same content as the debut version. The anecdote of Paul's voice goes to this day.

Details of "FIRST RECORDINGS"

One year after the private recording in the spring of 1960, the first professional recording session will be from June 22 (Thu) to 23 (Fri), 1961. At this time, the Beatles (Drums Pete Best) signed a recording contract with producer Bert Kempfeld until May 24 of the following year, and the day after (Brian Epstein who was the manager was intent. May 25) will be canceled without renewing the contract.

The Beatles in this session participated as Tony Sheridan's back band and were recorded at Friedrich Ebert Hall (Hamburg) rather than at the recording studio. Engineer Karl Hinze has a two-track Telefunken tape recorder installed in the dressing room behind the stage for live recording in stereo. It should be noted that overdubbing is not done and mixing is done on-site.

The Beatles and Tony Sheridan have recorded 7 songs (hereinafter, in no particular order), and 2 of them (marked with *) are performed by the Beatles alone.
  1. Ain't She Sweet (★ lead vocal is John)
  2. Take Out Some Insurance On Me, Baby The
true title is'If You Love Me, Baby'
  3. Nobody's Child
  4. My Bonnie
  5. The Saints
  6. Cry for A Shadow (★ Harrison/Lennon instrumental song)
  7. Why
Kempfeld chose'My Bonnie ' and'The Saints ' as their first releases , with the former producing two types of intros ( English and German ). Incidentally, George wrote in a letter to a friend (May, a year later) that "In "My Bonnie", he plays the lead guitar with vocal back, but in the interlude, Tony plays."
The single (My Bonnie / The Saints) was first released in German intro version on October 23, 1961 (in Germany), then in English intro version in December of the same year. The other two songs (' Cry For A Shadow ' and'Why ') were recorded in an EP in France in April 1962.

Subsequent developments are historical, with the record being delivered to Liverpool shortly after it was released in Germany, with some dozens sent to former bandmates via Stuart Sutcliffe. The anecdote of Raymond Jones buying records is Saturday, late October (applicable October 28).
On November 9, Epstein visited the Cavern Club, and on New Year's Day 1962, the Beatles will be auditioned for Decca Records. However, the chart trend of'My Bonnie', which was released in the UK on January 5th, was not so good, and the British Polydor quickly lost interest, and Decca sent a refusal notice in early February.

After that, Epstein went around the record company with an acetate board that recorded the performance at Decca.
Meanwhile, Kempfeld is recording with Sheridan using his orchestra instead of the absent Beatles to prepare a single following'My Bonnie'. Around this time, as a result of discussions with Epstein, it is said that he intended to free the Beatles without waiting for the contract to expire.

The Beatles are heading to Hamburg to appear in the Star Club, which opens on April 13 (Stewart Sutcliff died on April 10).
It is said that Epstein had a plan to record 12 songs at the end of this stay (May 28-29) and release it on his own label, but it was actually the second time with Sheridan. (And the last) session. No other change in Epstein's plan was made, as Martin agreed to sign the Beatles on May 9.

On the final day of the deal with Kempfeld (5/24), The Beatles are in a recording session with Sheridan. Sheridan seems to have been absent. On this day, only backing performances of'Sweet Georgia Brown' and'Swanee River' were recorded at the Larstedt studio, and it was pianist Roy Young who participated. Sheridan has overdubbed the vocals on June 7, but Paul is playing the piano because he was screaming "Ahh! Tell it to me, Paul!" during the piano interlude. I seem to have misunderstood that.
Another source (June 13 and 6/22 dated) has a description of'James Paul McCartney' as an arranger (probably due to the addition of three voice harmony), and these two songs are singles. Has been planned as. However, only " Sweet Georgia Brown " recorded in the EP "Ya Ya" (Germany only) in October 1962 was actually released, and the sound source itself of "Swanee River" has been lost.

Following the Beatles' success, Polydor turned to three previously unreleased songs (' Ain't She Sweet ',' Nobody's Child ',' If You Love Me, Baby (Take Out Some Insurance On Me, Baby) ') In 1964 alone, 70 types of planning boards were released to the world. In addition,'Sweet Georgia Brown' has new lyrics in early January 1964, and Sheridan has replaced only the vocals and added it to this lineup.
At this point,'Swanee River' is unknown. Sheridan also notes that'Some Other Guy','Kansas City' and'Rock'n' Roll Music were recorded at Friedrich Ebert Hall but could not be found.

Kempfeld's business partner Milt Gabler is head of American pop music for Decca, and Kempfeld convinced him to "My Bonnie/The Saints" in April 1962. Released in USA and Canada. However, the sales were not so good, and one retailer said that the number distributed for promotion was higher than the number sold.

By the time the Beatles whirlwind raged in North America in 1964, the US sales rights from Polydor to MGM ('My Bonnie','The Saints','Cry For A Shadow','Why') and Atlantic ('Ain't She Sweet','Nobody's Child','Sweet Georgia Brown','Take Out Some Insurance On Me, Baby'), at which time the copyright was confirmed and'The Saints' was'The Saints (When the Saints Go Marching In)', the title of'If You Love Me, Baby' was changed to'If You Love Me, Baby (Take Out Some Insurance On Me, Baby)'.
After that, MGM modified "The Saints" (0'48") and "Why" (1'16") to include "My Bonnie/The Saints" in January and 4 songs in February. In March, "Why (Can't You Love Me Again)/Cry For A Shadow" was released in the US and Canada.

Meanwhile, Atco has decided to make a big correction and has added drums and a guitar to four of their rights. The drum player at this time is Bernard "Pretty" Purdie, and the guitar player is Cornell Dupree. Atco released Sweet Georgia Brown / If You Love Me, Baby (Take Out Some Insurance On Me, Baby) in June and Ain't She Sweet / Nobody's Child in July in the US and Canada. The single was recorded in the album "Ain't She Sweet: The Beatles & Other Great Group Sounds from England" and released in October. After that, in October 1966, the same 4 songs were recorded in the album "The Amazing Beatles & Other Great Group Sounds from England" and released only in the United States.
