Record debut

The debut song has been released after twists and turns (3 versions with different drummers).
The middle 8 section that John made (as of June 6, the rhythm pattern was changed by the proposal of Pete Best who was in charge of drums ) is greatly involved. It is speculated that the lead vocal here was John, the composer, but it seems that John was also singing "love me do ~" (last A melody) immediately before that. Here Martin proposes to include a harmonica as in the intro. Of course, since John will be in charge of the harmonica, Paul suddenly changed to sing the main melody.
Partly because of that, the recording itself became NG, and Martin recommends'How Do You Do It' . Perhaps because the preparation period was taken into consideration, the re-challenge will be set after 3 months.

In the meantime (mid August), a drummer's alternation play (Pete -> Ringo) happened (George was making a bruise on his eyes due to the trouble related to this), and re-recording was done on September 4th, two weeks after the drummer change. Done. Although they reluctantly covered'How Do You Do It' , they were also dissatisfied with a new song'Please Please Me' (Roy Orbison style version). It would be a sign of opposition to repeat "please" for the song that was a combination of "How Do You Do" and "How Do You Do It" with "do".
In the end, 'How Do You Do It' with the intention of the Beatles sideWill be put in storage, but'Please Please Me' will be postponed for one week due to the need to change the arrangement (tempo up).

At this timing, they have a new weapon J-160E (Gibson acoustic guitar with pickup).
On September 11, the third full recording, the candidates were narrowed down to three songs ( 'PS I Love You' , 'Please Please Me' , 'Love Me Do' ).

When it was time to record, session drummer Andy White played and Ringo struck the tambourine. Martin's testimony is left here, saying, "I was so sorry that I made apples hit the last few takes." In the apple version , there is no tambourine, but the acoustic guitar sound is louder, and the interlude includes clapping (presumably Andy White).
The apple version was used for the debut single, and was replaced with the Andy White version one week later, but it is possible that this was due to Martin's consideration rather than an accident. However, some legends are still interesting and adapted.

It is necessary to keep in mind that "recording is a task of making a master tape for making a record". Since the work up to this point was to create a single board (monaural only), it was a single recording from the beginning. The method of recording two tracks and mixing down to monaural has been disliked due to the importance of sound quality because noise is generated by tape copying.

Please Please Me,

Love Me Do testifies that Andy White beats the drums, but Martin is so sorry that he finally made Ringo hit the drums as well. This seems to be the drums version of apple .

George: "When Phil Spector was making'Zip-A-Dee Doo-Dah', the engineer who's set up the track overloaded the microphone on the guitar player and it became very distorted. Phil Spector said,'Leave it like that, it's great.' Some years later everyone started to try to copy that sound and so they invented the fuzz box."

In'I'm Talking About You' , which was the source of the bass riff of'I Saw Her Standing There' , I changed the phrase slightly so that the source does not come out, but in later years LIVE AT THE BBC ( In ON AIR VOL.2), you can see that the phrase has been returned to the same phrase as this song.

The remake version of'Please Please Me', which is said to have been recorded on September 11, 1962, had a chorus part brushed up as a second single candidate on November 26, and John's trademark harmonica was also added. It was It is still a mystery as to when the addition of this harmonica was judged, and it was recorded with an arrangement that could not be performed live.

After recording two tracks in a normal formation that does not include harmonica, I added the method of playing harmonica while mono mixing. Alternatively, the first performance itself is a monaural recording, and it is conceivable to replace it with the editing part (the additional performance while copying only the section where harmonica is added from monaural to monaural). This is a general correction procedure at that time that emphasizes sound quality, and later'Thank You Girl' has also been expanded to stereo recording (detailed later).
In any case, the harmonica at this point exists only in the monaural (single) master tape .

And surprisingly, the stereo version is forcibly made by printing the mono version on a two-track tape . Immediately after recording, Martin was convinced that he was number one, which meant the need to make an album, which also meant making a stereo version. Therefore, it is highly possible that the album production was not in mind before recording.
Most likely, the last three take for the stereo version (the first 16 to 18 take) is obtained by playing an additional, mono version to play while monitoring, when the mono version of This is a method in which only the harmonica part is extracted by EQ and mixed and recorded on two tracks. It is speculated that the final verse was left unskilled but was left unattended because it was for a stereo album with little demand.

Following this, the following'Ask Me Why' has been recorded from the beginning on two tracks.
Of particular note is the echo of the vocals on the left side of the stereo version . Since this echo is the same as the mono version, it can be confirmed that it is applied during recording. If you separate the performance and vocals as a two-track recording to make a mono version , the echo should be on the vocal side. In other words, it can be inferred that the stereo record (album) was recorded at this point.

By the way, the mixing work is separated from the recording work a long time ago, and the echo is used for mixing when the 4-track recording is started.
