Album production started

"PLEASE PLEASE ME"

On February 11th, a legendary marathon recording for the album is being performed. Four songs that require overdubbing from 10am to 13 hours ( 'There's A Place' , 'I Saw Her Standing There' , 'A Taste Of Honey' , 'Do You Want To Know A Secret' ) It started from.

To make the work more efficient, after recording the four basic tracks, additional work (while copying to another two-track tape) is done in sequence. First in the echo chamber adjustment is necessary in the 'Do You Want To Know A Secret ' and 'A Taste Of Honey' has been taken up. If you listen to the 7th take of'Do You Want To Know A Secret' and the 6th take of'A Taste Of Honey' recorded in “Bootleg Recordings 1963” (released only for iTines) , the echo amount is decided at the time of recording. I understand that it was.
Next, the harmonica of'There's A Place' ( 'Please Please Me' and later'From Me To You'As is the case with George using the octave technique, Martin plays harmonica), and adds the clapping of'I Saw Her Standing There' .
By the way, you can create a real stereo version with the basic track in the center by synchronizing the release version with the above take.

The overdub is a monaural and two-track simultaneous recording, that is, it is an additional recording while substantially mixing. This is also a proof that the sound quality on the monaural board was emphasized (the tape copy can be reduced once).

In the following'Misery ' , George played the lead guitar initially, and eventually it was almost cut to replace it with the piano. It clearly shows that the music production was conducted by Martin.

The last original song'Hold Me Tight' was a difficult time, and it was a smash of five covers ( 'Anna (Go To Him)' , 'Boys' , 'Chains' , 'Baby It's You' , 'Twist And Shout. ' Order) Recording and finished.

Among them, there is an interesting sound in the interlude of'Baby It's You' . In the first place, Martin also tried and errored as a sound source for stereo. In the second take of'I Saw Her Standing There', the lead guitar and rhythm guitar channels were recorded in reverse, and George's solo was recorded with echo on the playing side.
Even in the interlude of'Baby It's You', the lead guitar can be heard from the left and right. The left side is mainly the Celesta played by Martin, and the right side (vocal side) guitar sound is heard loudly, but it can be confirmed that the vocal side is actually a delay sound of about 9 milliseconds .
This is probably a recording trick, not a delay device. 9 ms is the time difference when the microphone is 3 meters away. In other words, the sound on the left (playing side) is the sound of a microphone placed in front of the guitar amp, and on the right (vocal side) is the microphone of John (or George's chorus) 3 meters away from George's guitar amp. It's a picked up sound. It is speculated that the compressor used a mechanism to automatically raise the volume of the microphone when the vocal sound disappeared during the interlude.
This day made the harmonica arrangements ( 'There'S A Place' and 'Chains' ) may have been carried out hastily in the intention of Martin.
The Beatles themselves did not include harmonica in the subsequent live performances, and the "Chains" (intro) was a melody only at this time that was not included in the original song.
It would be reasonable to assume that Martin used harmonica to characterize the Beatles for sale.

January 11, 1963
Released the single'Please Please Me' / 'Ask Me Why' .
It recorded 1st place in the melody maker magazine dated March 2, but remained 2nd place in Record Retailer magazine (this is the official record).

Is There's A Place around this time?

February 11, 1963
Recorded 10 songs and "Hold Me Tight " for "PLEASE PLEASE ME"
At this time,'Hold Me Tight' was Key E and the tempo seems to have been a little slow.

February 20, 1963
Additional recordings by Martin on Misery and Baby It's You .
The Beatles have no way of knowing how these were released!

February 25, 1963
All song mixing of "PLEASE PLEASE ME" (mono and stereo). However, there is no "editing version" described in "Recording Sessions."
Love Me Do and PS I Love You , which do not have 2-track tape , diverted the mono version, and the stereo version of'Please Please Me' was created by the method described above.
The mono version of "Ask Me Why" has been remixed, but it is not particularly different from the single version!

Two weeks after the Beatles were recorded, the album mixing (although it's probably a tape copy) was done, but before that Martin had some recording work left. On February 20, a half-speed recording piano was added to'Misery', and Celesta was added to the interlude of'Baby It's You' .
At this point it was clear that the initiative to create the album and the idea of half-speed recording were Martin's, and it turns out that things were going on without the Beatles involved.

Martin uses the contents of the two-track tape as a stereo sound image, but in the classical music world, which is his background, "the orchestra changes from high to low range instruments from left to right." There are various quartet arrangements, but it is interesting that the first violin is almost the leftmost. I think that I thought about how to divide the playing track into high and low with an equalizer and spread it to the left and right.

In addition, there is an important misconception in the editing work.
'I Saw Her Standing There' is the 12th take, but it is recorded that the “edited version” was created by replacing the count part with the 9th take . However, in the 9th take recorded in the anthology single "FREE AS A BIRD", you can listen to the whole count without being cut off. On the other hand, the difference between the mono version and the stereo version showing the edit mark can be confirmed immediately after the count. In other words, it can be asserted that there is no "edited version" itself, and that both mono and stereo are "edited versions of the mixed mix of only the count part of the 9th take and the 12th take." ..
It may be an unforgivable fact for audiophiles, but it seems that some Abbey Road monaural recorders have polarities that are reversed (plus and minus are treated), and the same song has plus and minus before and after tape editing. Is reversed.
The same applies to edited versions of other songs thereafter.

'From Me To You' ~ 'She Loves You'

Around February 28, 1963
To tour during the bank's Helen Shapiro 'From Me To You' and 'Thank You Girl' composer
"woo" is borrowed from'Twist And Shout' .
Paul describes the transition from C -> Gm to "Musical Growth" in the chorus of "From Me To You ", but does not suggest a connection with "All My Trials".

March 5, 1963

Recorded "She Loves You" and "I'll Get You" .
The source of the chord progression (D-Am) of'I'll Get You' is Joan Baez's'All My Trials' ( ⇒ 60/10 ) (Pole talk).

July 5, 1963
Co-starred with Denny Lane (Denny and the Diplomats) at the Plaza Ballroom concert.

Find out that'Please Please Me' became #1 in the Melody Maker magazine dated March 2 during Helen Shapiro's tour . Three days later, the third single is being produced.

Studio shots were taken during the session on March 5th, and you can see Martin sitting on the tour and listening to their performance. Probably this is a scene where we are discussing the songs to be recorded before the recording. At first (John and Paul) planned to be side A, 'Thank You Girl' became side B and'From Me To You' side A. It is presumed that this timing was upgraded to.

After that, recording started from'From Me To You' , but it seems that the song that makes the best use of harmonica was selected as the A-side (maybe just the song that you can use your own C tone harmonica). Although it is a two-track recording, it can be taken with a stereo sound image in mind, and is placed in the center when adding a harmonica (recorded on both track 1 and track 2). In addition, I was at a loss as to whether the intro should be a harmonica or a chorus. Still, I couldn't throw out the harmonica, and in the mono version , I put both together. Although this song also has a record of "edited version of multiple takes", no such version exists.
The recording of'Thank You Girl', which became the B side, is completed without adding harmonica. I recorded'One After 909' for the night session when it was free (although it was unreleased) .

However, it seems that he wanted to add a harmonica to'Thank You Girl', and is making an additional recording on March 13 (the day of the mixing work). I don't put it in the center like'From Me To You' here, but record it on the vocal side. Also, since the partial replacement by the editing part (1 to 2 measures) is performed with emphasis on sound quality or work efficiency , there is a difference in the insertion portion between the mono version and the stereo version .

During the production of the 3rd single ( 'From Me To You' / 'Thank You Girl' ), we are also doing stereo mixing that we do not plan to use for the time being. The stereo version of'Thank You Girl' is seen as an American version, but the stereo version of'From Me To You' is unused (recreated when "OLDIES").

Up to this point, it turns out that the British release system was to record hit singles on the album, but it seems that the policy was changed before the next single was produced. It is thought that the Beatles' claim that "the album and the single are different" was accepted at this time, and the fourth single "She Loves You" / "I'll Get You" will not make a stereo version. The 2-track tape has been disposed of.

The fourth single "She Loves You" / "I'll Get You" was recorded on July 1st, but the details are unknown because there is no recording tape. Then, when it was released on August 23, it became the first million seller on November 27.

Interestingly, even with'I'll Get You' , harmonica was added in addition to chorus, and it is clear that Martin was trying to sell as a group that harnessed harmonica, but this Beatles played harmonica at BBC live. I never used it ( also for'Thank You Girl' ).

A white feathered arrow stands as a band that uses Rickenbacker.

Since the plan for 2 albums/year has been set up, the second album will be released for the Christmas season.

With the surge in popularity, more and more radio appearances have been made since spring, and it seems that he used it to make albums. Many cover songs that were used as a repertoire have been played, and among them, "Till There Was You" , "Please Mister Postman" , and "Devil In Her Heart" have been previously adopted for the album. Among them, 'Please Mister Postman' has changed the ending to adopt a fade-out that can be done only on a record.

The original songs we started ( 'It Won't Be Long' , 'All My Loving' ) probably reflect the influence of the above cover songs.
By the way, Paul recalls that he thought, "If a performance mistake is not noticed to Martin, it's OK", but the bass of "All My Loving" is the best example.

It provided "I Wanna Be Your Man" to the Rolling Stones and prepared "Little Child" for Ringo, but Ringo seemed to have been given the option to choose between these two songs. Despite the fact that one take was created for each, the next day it was recorded again, so it seems that the first day was a demo recording. Ringo chooses the former but puts vocals on the last day of album production, during which it seems to be a practice period.
'Little Child' is a song by John and Paul, but it seems that the keys were low for both of them ( Key D ), and finally remake by changing the pitch.

George had already recorded two cover songs ( 'Devil In Her Heart' , 'Roll Over Beethoven' ) that took lead vocals, but composed a virgin'Don't Bother Me' in late August . That's why I got the third vocal song.

John was devoted to SMOKEY ROBINSON & THE MIRACLES at the time, and not only recorded'You Really Got A Hold On Me' , but also composed'All I've Got To Do' with him in mind . ..
He also wrote "Not A Second Time ", which was modeled on "something", but John's memory of this was lost in 1980. However, interestingly ad lib vocal of ending in 'All I've Got To Do' title part of that melody has been used, the album structure in which Ripley's effect (after the "Sgt. Pepper" famous) have a Has become.

On September 12th, the last tune "Hold Me Tight" is featured as the last song . Here, it is recorded in the state ( Key E ) before changing the pitch .

Apple's vocal recording was delayed to the last minute, and Martin's only work (the addition of the organ of'I Wanna Be Your Man' and the addition of the piano of'Money (That's What I Want)' ) was performed on September 30th .
It is speculated that the "edited version of'Hold Me Tight' " recorded on this day created a misunderstanding in the age of 2-track recording.
Probably a prototype made on this day (the original tape is not missing). The same goes for " Edit version of'Little Child' ", which is the work of the day as well.

First pitch change

Martin wasn't convinced of both songs, but couldn't find a solution. I tried the "edited version" but was not satisfied and decided to change the pitch to increase the tempo.
For'Hold Me Tight' , the vocals became a little shrill with a speedup of less than a semitone, but the Beatles side did not work, but since'Little Child' is a speedup of one note, vocals can no longer be used as expected. ..
As a result, John and Paul will be re-recording the'Little Child' vocal when Ringo's vocal is recorded on October 3 .
By the way, the'Hold Me Tight' mono version is the 26th take and the stereo version is the 29th take, so it has been confirmed that the “edit version” is not used.

Martin's Stereo Experiment

After the recording of the Beatles on October 3rd, only the mixing work of Martin will be done after that.
However, a mysterious work is being done at the very end. I'm doing stereo mixing of the entire album on October 29th, but the next day I'm making a stereo version of'Money (That's What I Want)', which synced (!) two mono versions . (This will be officially released).
Synchronized playback on analog tape

In the first place, the recording sheet on July 30 has a description of "TRACK 3", and it is known that the piano has been added twice at the 8th to 14th takes. After that, in this state, mono mixing is being performed on August 21, but the piano is being added again on September 30. The work record of this process is unclear, and the sixth and seventh takes frequently appear, so it is difficult to grasp the final state. We can only guess what was happening from the difference between the

remaining sound source mono (left) and stereo (right) .
What can be confirmed here is the difference in intro, another take by the piano, and the edit marks on the continuous piano chords (back of the first beat) just before the end of the interlude . In addition, was released on iTunes limited "The Beatles Bootleg Recordings 1963" From version ( "studio outtake") is the left channel of a stereo version is also able to confirm it is a mono version that was used to.

Of these differences, the "difference in the intro" is due to the editing of the 6th and 7th takes, and "the piano is another take" is the recorded content on July 30 (mono) and September 30 (stereo). Can be judged.

The problem is the edit mark just before the end of the interlude , and the vocals on the left and right are gradually displaced until just before this, and the echo effect is occurring, which is proof that "the two mono versions are synchronized". It means that the gap was once separated at a point where the gap could not be ignored. At this time, the one used for the left channel was the “The Beatles Bootleg Recordings 1963” recording version .
From that point on, it's guessed that the take that made the mono version recorded the piano on the playing side. This is not suitable for stereo sound images, so I think I made it on the vocal side on September 30th. I had no problem moving the vocals to the center at the time of this tape, but if you synchronize the version recorded "The Beatles Bootleg Recordings 1963" before adding the piano and the right channel (vocal piano) after adding the piano It is speculated that the stereo version was designed by experimenting with the expectation that vocals could be placed in the center .

"stereo! This is the Beatles VOL.2”

In the Japan original edition of this work, the A-side top is All My Loving .

In the original, the song is the third song, which is a halfway arrangement, and it is treated as "a good song but not a song I can boast of." Probably related to The Crickets''Don't Ever Change' , it seems that the Beatles side including Martin did not have a high initial rating. On the contrary, the popularity of the album has increased, and it has been so well received that it will be released as an EP disc.

Start of 4-track recording

On October 17, the 5th single ( 'I Want To Hold Your Hand' / 'This Boy' ) was recorded in parallel with Martin's album production work . Prior to that, 'You Really Got A Hold On Me' was probably the equipment test for the new weapon, the 4-track recorder.
Even though it became a 4-track recording, it was still recorded in live format, but George's lead guitar was assigned a dedicated track independently from the performance. The remaining 1 track is used as a track (additional recording is a prerequisite) for devising the arrangement depending on the song.
In Recording Sessions, the fourth empty track was misunderstood, and there is no idea that additional recordings will be made for the same take. Therefore, a description such as a two-track recording in which a previous take is copied and added to another take is occasionally found.

Actually, the 4-track tape copy seems to have been very noisy and has not been recorded until'Help!' recording (April 1965).
Also, it has been confirmed in the notes of some songs left by Martin that copying is being performed between tracks, but since it is not described in "Recording Sessions", details can be completely grasped. It does not mean that
* At the time of additional recording, the method of playing the speaker installed in the studio was adopted instead of monitoring the recorded sound with headphones. As a result, the compressor works during the intervals between the additional vocals, and the monitor sound is recorded loudly, so you can check the stereo version of each song.
In'I Want To Hold Your Hand' , the fourth track features John and Paul's vocals as the W track, as well as semitone progression phrases and clapping with George's guitar and Paul's bass. For this reason, the semitone progression phrase (Paul is George only because he concentrates on the song) and clapping are also added to the German version .
In addition, the echo processing became the work in the mixing stage because the vocal-only track was created. Also, since the 4th track can be used for adjusting the arrangement , the feature of the mono version is to emphasize the clapping hands by adjusting the volume .

In "This Boy" , the 3rd harmony is used as the W track by using the 4th track as well, but instead of recording the same contents on the 2 tracks, one is John and the other is Paul. By doing so, I try to maintain a balance between the two when mixing. This recording method is the basis of the subsequent W track recording.
